What is Bone Grafting?

A dental bone graft adds density and volume to the jaw bone. Missing teeth cause bone loss because the missing root no longer receives stimulation from chewing. In the first year after losing a tooth, patients may lose 25% of the bone mass in that area.

Bone grafts can build up lost jaw bone strength and provide enough structure to support dentures or dental implants. The ground and sterilized bone graft material forms a scaffold for the natural bone to grow.

The material used in the graft may come from one of three sources:

  • Allograft: The bone medium is from cadaver bone.
  • Xenograft: The bone comes from an animal tissue bank.
  • Autograft: The bone comes from elsewhere in the patient's body.

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

Socket Preservation- The oral surgeon places a bone graft in the same procedure as extracting a tooth. This type of graft helps create a strong foundation for an implant.

Sinus Lifts- For stability, implants need a minimum length to be successful. In certain patients, the maxillary sinus droops very low and wraps around the roots of the upper teeth. In those patients, there is inadequate height of bone for an implant to be placed. A sinus lift is a procedure in which the oral surgeon delicately lifts the membrane from the sinus floor and places a bone graft to regain enough bone height for an implant to be placed. There are two types of sinus lifts, internal and external.

Ridge Augmentation- This procedure restores the natural shape of the jaw and gums so the patient can receive implants or dentures. Proper bony contours allow the patient to maintain optimal gum health and also help dentures fit well without sore spots.

Infuse® Bone Morphogenic Protein- Infuse® is a special protein that helps the body grow bone tissue. Oral surgeons often use it when performing a bone graft for two or more teeth.

Who are Good Candidates for Bone Grafting?

If patients have bone loss in their jaws, they are likely good candidates for bone grafting. They may need a dental bone graft in the following situations:

  • Extracting a tooth
  • Replacing a missing tooth with an implant
  • Replacing bone after removal of pathosis such as a cyst or tumor
  • Gaining height of bone with sinus lifts

Frequently Asked Questions About Bone Grafting

How do I know if I need a bone graft?
To prepare for implants or dentures, Dr. Albadawi will take images of the teeth and jaw bone using the CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scanner. The CBCT scanner produces a 3-D digital model of the teeth and jaws. The doctor will be able to see whether the patient needs grafting before they can proceed with restoring the teeth.
What is the success rate of bone grafting?
Bone grafts are successful in most cases. The goal of the graft is to grow a dense and healthy bone.
How long does it take for a bone graft to heal enough to get an implant?
The surgery site will feel back to normal within a week or two, but the bone will take three to nine months to grow to the point where the oral surgeon can place an implant.
Can patients receive a bone graft in the same procedure as a tooth extraction?
Yes, it is easiest to do the procedure at the same time, but patients can also receive the graft at a later date.
Are dental bone grafts uncomfortable?
A dental bone graft is a minor surgical procedure. Some patients opt to have sedation, as they are also having a tooth extraction done at the same time and prefer to sleep during the procedure. The surgeon can prescribe prescription pain medication to take at home if they believe it is necessary.
