What Is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia refers to the use of medicine to induce a temporary loss of awareness and sensation. While local anesthesia eliminates painful sensations, general and IV anesthesia are useful tools in oral surgery in that they address other aspects of the procedure that patients may wish to eliminate as well, such as sounds, feelings of vibration, and stretching of the cheeks and tongue.

Benefits of anesthesia in dentistry

  • Eliminates Discomfort- Some dental procedures can be uncomfortable due to their complexity. IV sedation and general anesthesia eliminate sensation from the procedures entirely.
  • Helps Worried Patients Relax- Many people feel anxious about oral surgery. When patients know they will receive anesthesia, they are less likely to worry about their procedure beforehand and less likely to put off an important dental procedure due to anxiety.
  • Improves Oral Health- When patients feel confident about keeping appointments for important dental work, their oral health improves.
  • Makes Procedures Safer- Since patients do not move under anesthesia, dental procedures are safer.
  • Makes Procedures Faster- Oral surgeons can accomplish more in one appointment with a patient under anesthesia. They can work more quickly and efficiently.

Anesthesia Options We Offer

Intravenous Sedation- Oral surgeons give patients anti-anxiety medication through an IV. This medication helps patients to relax. They may not completely lose consciousness but will likely not remember the procedure.

General Anesthesia- This technique is similar to intravenous sedation, but the oral surgeon uses different medications that cause the patient to lose consciousness. The patient will sleep through their procedures with no sensation or awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anesthesia in Dentistry

How safe is dental anesthesia?
Dental anesthesia is safe for most patients. Dr. Albadawi will review your individual medical history at your consultation to see if you are a candidate for anesthesia for your procedure. If needed, he can consult with your physician or other medical specialists. Safety is of the utmost importance here at Davis Oral Surgery & Implant Center.
Can patients have dental anesthesia in the office?
In most cases, we can perform dental procedures needing anesthesia in the office. Sometimes, however, a hospital setting is more appropriate.
Will patients remember anything from their procedures?
Patients should not remember anything from the appointment if they have IV sedation. With general anesthesia, patients will be asleep and will not remember the procedure.
How long does it take general anesthesia to wear off?
Most people feel sleepy for a few hours after waking up from anesthesia. Most of the effects of general anesthesia are gone within 24 hours.
Can I drive home after dental anesthesia?
Patients must not drive on the day of their oral surgery. They will need a responsible adult driver to bring them to and from our office. They must not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following the appointment.
