Ways to Prepare for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Most people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed. More often than not, there is not enough room in the mouth for these large third molars, which results in problems. They may be stuck below the gums or come in crooked and push against the other teeth. The sooner they are extracted the better in most cases.

If you have an upcoming appointment for wisdom teeth removal, here are some important steps to prepare for the procedure.

  1. Take Time Off Work.

Wisdom teeth removal is an oral surgery procedure that will require some recovery time. Plan to take up to 3 days off work to rest afterwards. Recovery experiences vary from patient to patient. You may be ready to return to work after a day’s rest, or you may need a few days to rest and recover. It is best to avoid strenuous exercise for 3-4 days at least, but if your job is mostly sedentary or if you work from home you may be able to return sooner.
  2. Secure Transportation.

In most cases wisdom teeth removal requires the use of sedation, which means you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
  3. Arrange After Care.

It is also important for someone to stay with you at home after your procedure. You may not be feeling well enough to fully care for yourself, and there is always a risk of post-op side effects. You can always stay with someone else if no one can come to your home, but most people would prefer to be in the comfort of their own home during recovery.
  4. Purchase and Prepare Food.

After wisdom teeth removal you will need to eat primarily liquids and soft foods. Be sure to purchase things you like that are also healthy to promote healing. Some things may require preparation the day before, such as jello or pudding. Be sure to let hot foods and beverages cool before consumption. Cold is beneficial after surgery to reduce swelling and inflammation.
  5. Follow Pre-Operative Instructions.

Your oral surgeon will give you instructions to prepare for surgery beginning the night before or the morning of, such as:
  • No food after midnight the day before your surgery.
  • Brush your teeth the morning of your surgery.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco use at least 8 hours before surgery.
